SubjectToClimate gives K-12 educators standards-aligned, teacher-reviewed and scientist-approved resources to bring climate action into any subject they already teach. Every lesson we build is grounded in a consistent set of design principles and pedagogical frameworks, outlined below, so that climate is never an add-on to instruction but a lens that makes the learning teachers already do more real-world, relevant, and equitable.

Integration over Addition
Climate change is not taught as a standalone subject but woven into existing K-12 curriculum, as a lens for exploring core academic content. Teaching climate and meeting required standards reinforce each other rather than compete.

Every lesson reflects real classroom realities: pacing, differentiation, and student needs. Design favors practical application over theory, and every lesson is flexible and adaptable across diverse educational contexts.
Frameworks for Lesson Design
Inquiry-Based Learning
Students investigate real-world climate data, issues, and impacts directly, progressing from understanding concepts to constructing meaning, analyzing implications, and exploring solutions - grounded throughout in questioning, critical thinking, and evidence-based reasoning.
Culturally Responsive Teaching
Lessons reflect students' own communities, cultures, and lived experiences. Students from communities most affected by climate change are valued as knowledge holders and problem solvers, and local and cultural knowledge is treated as essential alongside climate science.
Pedagogical Approach in Lesson Development
Interdisciplinary & Cross-Subject Integration
Math, English, Social Studies, Science, and the Arts each have meaningful entry points for climate. Companion lessons across disciplines let students build cumulative understanding K-12.

Designed by and for teachers, SubjectToClimate lessons and unit plans are easy-to-follow, student-centered, and standards-based. Each plan shows you how to integrate climate change into the topics you already teach in the classroom.
Our inquiry-based lesson plan framework follows an active learning model in three sections: Inquire, Investigate, Inspire:
Inquire
Students spark their curiosity, ask questions, and engage in ways that ensure 100% participation.
Investigate
Students build understanding of the climate topic while developing academic skills.
Inspire
Our ready-to-use lessons include a Teaching Tips section with ideas for preparation and differentiation, and all Accompanying Materials, created in Google Suite, needed to teach the lesson.
Our framework easily integrates with other widely used student-centered approaches such as NGSS Science and Engineering Practices, C3 Inquiry Approach, IB Circle of Inquiry, 5E Model, and the CER - Claim, Evidence, Reasoning Model.
