Synopsis
In this lesson, students explore the work of engineers, learn about wind energy, and create a model of a windmill.
Step 1 - Inquire: Students learn what engineers do through an engineering challenge and activate background knowledge about energy.
Step 2 - Investigate: Students learn how William Kamkwamba engineered wind energy to help his community in Malawi and investigate how wind can be transformed into energy that we can use in our homes.
Step 3 - Inspire: Students experiment with shape and form to create a model of a windmill.

Angelique Hammack
K-8 General and Special Education Teacher
Angelique Hammack is a K–5 educator with a Master of Arts in Education from California State University, San Marcos. She has been teaching since 2017 and specializes in reading, mathematics, and writing in both general and special education settings. Angelique is a certified CALTPA Multiple Subject Scorer and holds an Education Specialist Credential.
Steven Vande Zande
Arts Integration Support Teacher
Steve Vande Zande, an Arts Integration School Teacher Leader for Milwaukee Public Schools, helps to develop arts integrated classrooms across the district, through professional development, mentoring, curriculum design, and strategic planning. Prior to this position, he worked as a Program Implementer and Visual Art teacher in public schools. Vande Zande holds a BFA in the areas of Art Education from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and a MS Educational Policy and Leadership and studio art from Bank Street College of Education and Parsons the New School For Design. In his current studio practice, Vande Zande works as a printmaker. Currently he teaches a course on Arts Integration at Marquette University.
