Synopsis
In this lesson, students will watch videos and read texts to compare European ideas about the colonization of non-Christian lands and "dominion" over nature to Indigenous ideas about the connections between humans and nature. Students will learn how the Doctrine of Discovery led to the colonization of Indigenous lands and about the #LandBack movement to get those lands returned to the Indigenous peoples.
Teaching Materials
- Teachers may need to pause the Doctrine of Discovery video to accommodate for students’ varying reading speeds.
- This lesson will likely take multiple class periods.
- To save class time, teachers can assign the readings to students to complete before coming to class.
